How do I get my nieces and nephews to want good hygiene? e.g. brushing teeth, showering, clean clothes?
I like spending time with my nieces and nephews but what is the big deal about making them shower? I don’t even want to take these kids out if they don’t have good hygiene. Any ideas on how to encourage good behavior?
2nd answer is really good!
You have to tell them, the good and bad causes of doing it and not doing it. Like name one of their friends, for example: Maddie brushes her teeth and she has a pretty smile and smells good blah blah blah… It’ll make them want to be like others. And then it is always best to reward them to show them that they know they’re doing something right.

tell them that it is important and they have to do it everydy because they have to be big and strong and have heathy teeth andeat their veggies

Maybe take them to target or something and let them pick out some fun toothbrushes and toothpaste, let them pick out some fun smelling body wash and a new body puff, maybe some new hair things for your nieces, but slip it in that you can only wear the pretty hair things on pretty, clean, hair. You could get them their own little shower baskets to keep all their stuff in.
I mean you don’t want to embarrass and make them feel dirty, which I am sure you wouldn’t do, but maybe make it fun for them and it will stick with them.
Just an idea!

You need to encourage the parents to encourage good hygiene and behavior. They will not learn it if it isn’t being taught at home.

Show them a video on germs living on their hands and how they can lose teeth and get gum disease if teeth are not brushed, and also how they can get warts and scabies on their body if they don’t shower.
Scare the kids, just like religion does with hell.

Letting them pick stuff out is a good idea. I’d also suggest having a talk with the parents. However, you can also show them what poor hygiene can do. You can order agar which can be used to make DIY petrie dishes, and grow samples of germs from inside their mouths, on their hands, and on toilets, counters (clean and dirty), etc. In a couple of weeks, they’ll be able to see the germs everyone keeps talking about.
My daughter went through a (thankfully brief!) period where hygiene and cleanliness went out the window. She actually ended up hospitalized with a staph infection. She got ringworm at the same time because one of our cats had it. We’d been after her for a couple of months about it but when she got hospitalized, I didn’t get confrontational, I simply said, "This is the sort of thing we were talking about, when we talked about hygeine and keeping your room clean. We have had no problems since; in fact, she keeps after us if anything gets messy now.
