how old should you be when you start using whiting strips on your teeth?

Be very careful with this. Tooth whitening should only be performed on mature teeth, as the dental pulp (or nerve) is much larger in a child’s tooth. Whitening children’s teeth can create a much greater irritant for the tooth nerve, creating a great deal of tooth sensitivity. I hear a lot more experiences of sensitivity during / following tooth whitening in patients who are eighteen or younger then those patients who are twenty or older.
If you kids teeth are yellow, this may be caused by erosion partly removing the whiter layer of enamel – revealing the yellower dentine layer below, or it could be due to stains from their diet. If it is this, it may be worthwhile looking at the foods they are eating, and searching for those that may be discolouring or damaging their teeth.
Ask your dentist why your children’s teeth are yellow, and then you can look at the exact solution for them.
