How do I get insurance with kids and no job?

I got laid off a year ago and still can’t find a job. I work random farmhand jobs every now and then to make ends meet. My health insurance from my layoff package is about to expire. My wife is still part time until they decide to hire her full time so she doesn’t get any benefits. I have 2 boys that I am worried about if something happens. Is there anyway to find health insurance/ dental. I tried a few places like BC-BS and they wanted an arm and a leg.

I really can’t answer your question because I live in Canada & our medical system is different than yours. I just wanted to give you some words of encouragement because I understand the kinds of frustrations you must be feeling. Sometimes we get stuck into a certain way of thinking and we don’t realize we are limiting ourselves and keeping the things we want to happen from happening. Why are Dental and Vision Insurance separate from regular Health insurance?

Why are Dental and Vision Insurance separate from regular Health insurance? I have regular health insurance one me and my kids. I also have Dental and Vision insurance on just myself, because I can’t afford it for my kids. They are the ones who need it most. Why are Dental and Vision not included on Health insurance? I’m not talking about for Braces or colored contacts, but for wellness check-ups, fillings, glasses if needed, etc.

Networks are different for vision and dental. Also insurance companies are highly regulated by the state, and they can only write certain types of insurance, so if they don’t have license for dental or vision, you have to buy that fomr somewhere else. Like the prev poster said, people who REALLY need dental and vision are those who will use the hell out of it, so therefore it is more expensive. For check up, usually simple vision exam is free from your health insurance. Dental is separate but if you just want cleaning then pay out of your own pocket might be cheaper actually.

What health insurance is recommended for a single dad with 3 kids, with a budget but have decent coverage?

I am a single father of 3 kids and looking for health/dental/vision insurance for my family. We don’t really go to the doctor as much but still want decent coverage in case I need to do so. Any ideas? Am based in Southern California.

One through your employer. You can’t get vision and dental that doesn’t cost more than it pays, except through an employer group policy.

Otherwise, just go to your local agent, ask them to give you a couple quotes on a private policy.
