Is there a government program that helps college students with health/dental insurance?
I’m a college student in a Cal State University. I receive financial aid (grants) and I would like to know if there are government programs that will help me or give discount for health/dental insurance?
Thanks
The only program at the state level is Medi-cal and unless you have children under the age of 18 and have a 30 day disability, you will not qualify. Check at the student health center for options on getting low cost insurance that will at least cover the big stuff. They should also offer care there or can refer you to low cost clinics. County clinics and hospitals also offer care at a reduced sliding fee scale based on your ability to pay.

My niece is in college and she ran into the same problem. We didn’t find any government programs to help her but we did find a really inexpensive dental plan that saved her thousands of dollars on her dental work. She actually used it for her contacts and glasses too. She paid less than $15 a month for her plan and she was able to use it immediately. The company has a 30 day money back guarantee and she was really happy with it. There are no commitments either. She can cancel it anytime and restart it anytime if she wants too. I just went to the site for the savings details and their dental plans include the vision, prescription and chiropractic and save you up to 80% on your dental care. The site she used is: http://www.HealthAndDentalOptions.com

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be more affordable than an individual policy. To check if your school is participating, go to http://www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name at the prompt. Even if your school is not contracted with United Healthcare, you may become eligible by joining the ACSA (American College Student Association) for a minimal fee, and take advantage of the plan that covers college students across the US. If you don’t find your school listed, type in ACSA and view the benefits available to their members.
