Will my teeth suffer from what I’ve done?
I’m currently 16 (almost 17) and had bad hygiene for most of my life, particularly with brushing my teeth. As a little kid I never liked toothpaste and only brushed when told to by my parents (which was infrequent). I have appointments with a dentist 1-2 times a year and surprisingly I only had a cavity a couple times throughout my life. Still, I know my gums and teeth weren’t healthy and needed more brushing. For the past month though, I’ve gotten into the habit of brushing 1-2 times a day, usually in the night and morning and floss after every meal. I know I can’t do anything about the past, but I am curious as to whether I will suffer any long-term repercussions from my previous actions.
If they haven’t found any major problems now you’ll be fine. Lucky you
Just remember you have to be consistent. Get check-ups twice a year, or at least a cleaning one in awhile. Make sure you’re flossing and brushing properly- this website will tell you how: http://www.ada.org/public/games/animation/interface.asp
Avoid consuming too much sugar. I used to drink three glasses of iced tea a day, plus a cup of coffee and my gums would be sore. I gave up the iced tea and now my gums feel much better! It’s also helpful to rinse with warm salty water once in awhile (once or twice a week.) Be careful with alcohol mouthwashes or the aforementioned salt mouthwash because they can dry out your mouth!
As long as you take better care of them now, it should be fine =]
